Upton Youth Band is a non profit making independant youth organisation currently consisting of young people from within and around Upton-Upon-Severn & Malvern in Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire.
We are a show band consisting of Brass, Percussion - Drums,Tuned Percussion and Colourguard with a small group of woodwind for concerts only.
The UYBPAG is made up of 3 Bands, UPTON 'A' CORPS - UPTON CADETS, UPTON FUSION & our own Dance Academy, ELECTRIX. Information about each group can be found on their own pages. (See Links above).
We are members of the British Youth Band Association (BYBA) in whose approved National Competitions we compete against similar organisations, gaining recognition for our performance, parades, concerts and competitions throughout the year.
We compete in and around the Counties during the rest of the year against other marching bands of a similar standard and look forward to competing in Contest all over the Country. Trophies are awarded for the best wind section, the best percussion section, the best show design, the best colourguard and the best overall musical effect. Although the Band have worked hard to achieve what they do and win trophies at competitions, it isn't all work because we often have social events like Disco's, trips ie:Cadbury World, Bingo Sessions, and BBQ's where the youngsters often challenge the adults to a game of rounders and invariably win! The Bands do not only work as a team but they play as a team too, and all enjoy what they do!
We run our own Marching Band Competition every year, supported by BYBA, in our own small Town of Upton-upon-Severn. We are hoping to recieve as many entries from bands from all over the Country as we did last year and look forward to hosting them all on the day. There are many events happening during the day with stalls selling lots of different items and the many Bands Shows will provide a whole days entertainment for everyone. More details are available via the link above.
Rehearsals will be held every Thursday evening at The New Hill Centre, Upton-upon-Severn.
CADETS - Thursday 6pm - 7.30pm
'A' CORPS - Thursday 7.15pm - 9.15pm
We occasionally rehearse on Sundays and Tuesdays, especially if we are preparing for a Competition, but notice of these are given well in advance.
During the Winter months we learn all of the music which we play to a marching routine and we stay away on weekends for this, where we also have lots of FUN!
Highlights of each year are varied but recently, we performed at a Ballroom Dance in December which was enjoyed by everyone who attended. We are looking forward to our Summer Ball now which will be announced shortly.
Upton Cadets finished 4th in the Cadet Division in 2011 & a very credible 2nd in 2010. The 2011 season was a very difficult one has we have lost some of our Junior members which means that those who have remained needed to put in that little bit of extra work! We knew they could do it!
In 2009, Upton 'A' Corps finished 2nd in the BYBA League in Division 2. Although we were looking forward to being promoted to Division 1, we unfortunately had quite a few members leave which 'disabled' us for the 2010 season. However, Upton 'A' Corps are looking forward to competing again in the upcoming 2012 season - for which we are currently recruiting new members in all sections.
We also attended the 'World Showband Championships' at Bournemouth in July 2004 to compete against Bands from all over the World. From as far afield as Hong Kong, Thailand, America and Australia and were priveleged to be awarded with a 'Gold Award' for our performance on stage and a 'Bronze Award' for our performance on the arena.
One of our most coveted achievemenst was to be awarded a Gold Award and be 'Crowned' the Intermediate European Showband Champions in a contest at Midsomer Norton, and then to attain 3rd place at the BYBA National Finals at Birmingham in October of that year.
In August 2000, we took 2 coach loads to Disneyland Paris where we marched and played along 'Main Street USA'. This was a fabulous experience for one and all and very soon to be repeated.
